Tigresses bag historic WC win over Pakistan

Bangladesh women’s cricket team created history by claiming their first victory in the ICC Women’s World Cup with a 9-run win over Pakistan at Hamilton on Monday.

In response to Bangladesh’s 234, Pakistan were folded for 225-9 despite the valiant century of Sidra Ameen.

Bangladeshi bowlers delivered a great comeback as Pakistan were 155-1 at one stage. Openers Nahida Khan and Sidra Ameen guided the team well to break the jinx of 17 straight losses in the World Cup match for Pakistan.

Rumana Ahmed bowled Nahida, who made 43, in the 23rd over of the innings to get the first breakthrough for Bangladesh. After the departure of Nahida, skipper Bismah Maroof, who scored 31, supported Sidra well till Jahanara Alam removed her in the 37th over.

No Pakistani batter can join the rebuilding process of the innings as Fahima Khatun picked up wickets in regular intervals. Three Pakistani batters, including Nida Dar, Aliya Riaz and Fatima Sana went to the pavilion after facing the first ball.

Sidra, who scored a brilliant 104, was the last warrior for Pakistan walked back after scoring her first ODI ton.

For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun picked up 3 wickets while Rumana Ahmed claimed two. Both Jahanara Alam and Salma Khatun got one wicket for each.

Earlier, Bangladesh showed brilliant teamwork as they scored 234-7. Fargana Hoque was the highest run-scorer for Bangladesh with 71 while skipper Nigar Sultana scored 46.

Bangladesh men’s team also got their only victory in their first World Cup back in 1999 against Pakistan.
