Tigers fight back with late wickets to end Day 1 on positive note

Two late wickets give Bangladesh a positive end of the day one in the first Test against New Zealand at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

After the dismissal of Tom Blundell, umpires called off the day with New Zealand 258 for five in 87.3 overs.

Devon Conway was removed by Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque after scoring a magnificent 122 while opener Will Young scored 52. Henry Nicholls was unbeaten on 32.

For Bangladesh, pacer Shoriful Islam remained the pick of the bowlers, with two crucial wickets. Both Ebadot Hossain and Mominul Haque picked one for each.

Shoriful gave Bangladesh the breakthrough in the fourth over, removing Tom Latham, who is leading the side in the injury-forced absence of regular captain Kane Williamson, for 1.

However, Will Young and Devon Conway added 138-run for the second wicket. Najmul Hossain Shanto inflicted a run-out on Young who made 52 off 135 with six fours.

Shoriful broke through again and this time with the wicket of veteran Ross Taylor, who announced his retirement at the end of this cricket season after he scored 31.

Conway was surprisingly dismissed by occasional bowler Mominul Haque. Conway, who looked utterly disappointed with his dismissal made 122 off 227, hitting 16 fours and one six.

Ebadot Hossain then dismissed Tom Blundell for 11 at the far end of the day.
