Stranded 28 Bangladeshi sailors to return Wednesday

The 28 sailors of the Bangladeshi ship ‘Banglar Samriddhi’, who were stranded in war-torn Ukraine, will leave for Bangladesh from Romania’s capital Bucharest by a special flight on Tuesday evening.

“Hopefully, they will reach Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday morning,” said Captain Md Mujibur Rahman, Deputy General Manager of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation.

“The body of the ship’s third engineer Hadisur Rahman, who was killed during a rocket attack on the ship, has been preserved in a bunker near Ukraine and it will be brought back home at a convenient time.”

On March 6, 28 stranded sailors of the ‘Banglar Samriddhi’ have been safely reached Romania from Ukraine and have been staying in a hotel in Bucharest.

The BSC ship got stranded in Ukraine as the Russian invasion started soon after it anchored at Olvia port on February 23.

A sailor named Md Hadisur Rahman has been killed after a missile hit the ship on March 2.
