The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Rajshahi’s Katakhali municipality mayor Abbas Ali following his derogatory remarks about a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The members of RAB arrested him from Hotel Razmoni Ishakha in the capital’s Kakrail area on Wednesday morning.
Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the legal and media wing at RAB headquarters, confirmed the information.
According to the RAB officials, Abbas has been hiding at different hotels in the capital without carrying any digital devices so that no intelligence agencies can trace his location.
No mobile phone was found with him during the drive, said Khandaker Al Moin.
Moin further said that he admitted that he made the remarks which spread on social media in primary interrogation.
Earlier On November 22, an audio clip of Abbas went viral on social media, where he denied allowing the installation of a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Rajshahi City Gate citing the Islamic Sharia law.
Following this, Rajshahi Awami League expelled his membership in its executive committee.
However, Abbas claimed that he has been a victim of a conspiracy in a Facebook live.
