The government has suspended Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam.
Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Tajul Islam made the statement in a briefing on Thursday.
Tajul Islam said that Gazipur city mayor Zahangir has been suspended temporarily. A notification in this regard will be issued today.
There are several allegations, including land grabbing and embezzlement, against him. These allegations are being investigated. If proved, he will be removed permanently, he added.
Earlier on November 19, Zahangir was expelled from Awami League for his controversial comments on the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Liberation War martyrs.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Awami League’s Central Working Committee with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
