Dr. Kazi Sumona Sharmin, Medical Officer of LifeSpring, was the keynote speaker of the workshop. Students from different universities have participated in the workshop.
Several issues regarding cervical cancer, its risks, misconceptions, ways to prevent and cure are discussed in the workshop.
Focusing on the risks of cervical cancer, Dr. Kazi Sumona Sharmin, said, “The Pap smear test and the HPV test can help to find cervical cancer at an early stage.”
She recommended all go for these tests every three years. However, she slammed the misconception of women having cervical cancer can’t able to give birth to a child.
Cervical cancer, caused by Human Papillomavirus, is considered the second most common cancer among women in Bangladesh. Besides, there are many other factors that increase the risk of cervical cancer, such as child marriage, poor immunity, smoking, multiple sexual relations, negative effects of birth control pills and giving birth to more children in a shorter time.
The EMK Center was the venue partner to facilitate the workshop while LifeSpring was the associate partner. BRAC Youth Platform’s project ‘Amra Notun Network’ monitored the workshop.
