Several fire incidents were reported across the country, including the capital’s Jatrabari, Demra, Lalbagh, Sutrapur and Khilgaon areas, caused by rogue sky lanterns, during New Year celebrations on Friday night.

Shahjahan Shikder, Public Relations Officer of Fire Service, said, “We have received information of several fire incidents, including at least 10 places in the capital.”

Most of the fire incidents were very minor cases and were caused by sky lanterns crashing on rooftops during the New Year celebration.

He added that most of the blazes were doused by the locals.

Two firefighting units brought a fire under control around 12:55 am at the rooftop of a three-storey building in Dhaka’s Matuail.

However, no casualties or injuries were reported so far due to these blazes, he concluded.
